Choosing our Armies
Tris – I chose to go with an army using the Chaos Allegiance. The Battle Trait that this provides is called Unpredictable Destruction and this allows you to roll a dice in the combat phase for all of your units that are within 8? of a friendly character and on a roll of a 6 you get to add +1 to hit for that unit. The other two benefits from taking a Chaos Allegiance are the Command Traits (I chose Great Destroyer) and Artefacts of Chaos (I decided on The Crown of Conquest).
So with an infantry based force in mind (a mixture of Battleline and what are known as Other units) backed up by a variety of useful Heroes (known as Leaders in a Matched Play game) and maneuverable support units I chose a 2000 point force and you can check out the full list below:
Dralgor the Shining – Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount, General. Mark of Nurgle. Command Trait – Great Destroyer, Artefact of Chaos – Crown of Conquest.
Tantacules (ten-tack-u-leez) the Unnecessarily Foul – Daemon Prince dedicated to Nurgle. Behemoth.
Mortigan the Wanderer – Chaos Sorcerer Lord.
Belgrad Oathkeeper – Exalted Hero with Battle Standard.
The Sons of Dralgor – 10 Chaos Warriors including Aspiring Champion, Standard Bearer and Hornblower and wielding two hand weapons.
The Heralds of Dralgor – 10 Chaos Warriors including Aspiring Champion, Standard Bearer and Hornblower and wielding hand weapons and Chaos Runeshields.
The Scions of Dralgor – 10 Chaos Warriors including Aspiring Champion, Standard Bearer and Hornblower and wielding halberds and Chaos Runeshields.
The Sunderers – 10 Chaos Chosen including Aspiring Champion, Icon Bearer and Skull Drummer.
The Hounds of Dralgor – 10 Chaos Knights including Doom Knight, Standard Bearer and Hornblower and wielding Ensorcelled hand weapons.
The Doomhorn – Gorebeast Chariot with Exalted Charioteer.
The Thunderhorn – Gorebeast Chariot with Exalted Charioteer.
Jamie – I chose my army from the Destruction Allegiance, focussing on units with the Ogor keyword. Much like Tris I wanted to sample the new Command Traits and Artefacts that were on offer. I chose to make my General a Bellowing Tyrant and handed him a flagon of Battle Brew to enhance his already formidable fighting skills.
Gurzang the Obese – Tyrant with Slicer and Ogor Pistols. General, Fateseeker, Bellowing Tyrant, Battle Brew.
Turgan the Titanic – Butcher.
Morgodds Maulers – 6 Ogors with Blades & Iron Fists. Crusher, Bellower and Icon Bearer.
The Titans Gutbargers – 6 Ogors with Blades & Iron Fists. Crusher, Bellower and Icon Bearer.
Gurzangs Pitfighters – 3 Ogors with Fists (Ogor Clubs). Crusher.
Bolgrot?s Cannonfists – 6 Leadbelchers. Thunderfist and Bellower.
The Earbleeder – Ironblaster
Eyegouger, Skullmuncher and Skinflayer – 3 Gorgers
The Wanderers – 6 Maneaters with Slicers and Ogre Pistols. Crack Shots.
Key points in the game
Tris – The Pitched Battle scenario that we were playing requires you to split the number of units you have into three groups, with the first group you have on the board containing as many of your Battleline units as possible. With my three Chaos Warriors units in my starting lineup I was sure this would stand me in good stead until the cavalry (quite literally) would arrive but what I didn?t reckon on was how disgustingly violent Ogor units are in a fight. I soon discovered that my poor forlorn Warriors were getting out punched for contention of the objectives in the early stages of the game. This was very apt in one case as Gurzangs Pitfighters have no weapons, just fists!
Later on in the game my Chaos Knights would arrive but thanks to some particularly sneaky (although Jamie denies this) setting up if one of his Gorgers I was forced to bring them on in a far flung corner of the board. Luckily, thanks to an amazing slingshot like maneuver that saw the Hounds of Dralgor plunge through a nearby Realmgate at full gallop, they appeared behind Jamie?s Leadbelcher gun line. This distracted Jamie from mopping up the rest of my army for a small amount of time and allowed me some revenge by trampling the Ogor?s support troops. Although enjoyable, this was too little too late to rescue my tattered battle plan.
What?s next for our armies?
Tris – What this encounter with the Ogors taught me is that perhaps I could do with some cheaper rabble like troops in my force to bring a bit more of a balance to what I have already. At the same time and at the other end of the scale, a big scary monster character or two would certainly help me in the combat department. My next step is to implore Grandfather Nurgle for some help from his verminous minions. I can see some Plague Monks and a Verminlord Corruptor in my very near future?
Jamie – Much like Tris I feel the need for more units. The Realmgates constantly shifted battlelines and having some extra, cheaper units to hold these and support my Leadbelchers could be very valuable. Grots it is. I think there are going to have to be some Ironguts added to the Wartribe too, Tris?s Daemon Prince was very difficult to deal with and the extra -1 rend and wound done by an Irongut would have made short work of him.
And there you have it. About 2 hours, a load of crazy Realmgate shenanigans and a whole load of stomped monsters. Matched Play is a great way to test your might, and we?re already busy trying to put together the best armies we can. Keep your eyes peeled for more battle reports!
