Narrative Play – Path to Glory

So I?ve just put down the General’s Handbook (well Jamie ripped it out of my hands, anyway.) I?m really impressed with what I?ve seen, to me Age of Sigmar is all about playing how you want to play and this book will support everyone in doing that.

Since Warhammer Age of Sigmar was released I?ve been playing narrative style games and I have loved it. Every unit in my collection has earned itself a name and a rich (if not glorious) history. When I pick up The Unbjorn, i?m not looking at a unit of Skullreapers, I?m seeing the many times Darius Unbjorn killed Jamie?s Duardin Heroes with his Vicious Mutation. I?m seeing the look of unfulfilled vengeance in Jamie?s eyes as he curses them once more.

When I picked up the General’s Handbook I thumbed through it furiously and went straight to the narrative section. It?s full of fantastic advice about how to set up your own narrative games and even better, campaigns. As soon as I saw the path to glory campaign I knew I had to persuade my friends to give it a go. I?ve been itching for an excuse to collect a Stormcast Eternal force since I bought the starter set last year, and Path to Glory has pushed me over the edge.

The thing I love about Path to Glory is that it hits several of my hobby buttons. Firstly it guides you into forging your own narrative. Your units gain rewards that give them an in game bonus but also give you an opportunity to create a cool story too. What, for example, would be the reason behind my Lord-Celestants Dark Destiny bonus?

Secondly it gives me a guide to collecting an army. In Path to Glory, the type of Hero you take gives you access to a certain number of units. I plan on having a Lord-Celestant on a Dracoth so I will have 6 units in my starting collection. If I wanted I could pick all of those units or even select them entirely randomly!

Just for fun, I had a go at rolling my force up randomly and this is what I got:

The Knights of the Eternal Flame

Lord-Celestant on Dracoth

5 Retributors

10 Liberators

10 Liberators

3 Prosecutors

1 Lord-Relictor

2 Concussors

This looks like a solid block of Stormcast Eternals with which to get going, after each game I can add more followers too if I choose. I?ve already painted five Liberators and a Lord-Relictor so i?m well on my way here already. I?ll spend some time naming my heroes and then set about getting my friends to join in (knowing them it won’t be hard).
